Narodnaya Volya journalist found dead from traumatic brain injury
Two days ago, Vasil Hrodnikau, a correspondent for the independent newspaper Narodnaya Volya was found dead, with serious injuries to his head and brain. The circumstances surrounding his death are under investigation by Belarusian police. -This is the third violent death among independent Belarusian journalists since 2000, Andrej Dynko (right) editor of Nasha Niva, reminded the audience at a seminar at the Human Rights house in Oslo yesterday. Closure of independent daily Narodnaya Volya
The only independent daily in the Republic of Belarus, which represents 65 per cent of the non-governmental print media circulation in the country, went out of business on Monday, 3 October. The two state distributors and the publishing house had all at the same time decided to cancel their contracts, citing different reasons. (18-OCT-05)

UN special reporter banned entry
A UN special reporter was banned entry to the country because his mission is to collect information about the human rights in the Republic of Belarus. Instead, he will visit the Baltic states where he is going to meet representatives of the government and other governmental and nongovernmental organizations. (19-SEP-05)
Pinsk press under pressure
New chair of the Pinsk ideology department forces heads of organizations and enterprises to subscribe to Sovetskaya Belorussiya, a pro-governmental newspaper. Simultaneously, Miastsovy Chas weekly, the only independent newspaper is banned. (19-SEP-05)
Polish TV cameraman not allowed to Belarus
The conflict around the Union of Poles in the Republic of Belarus continues. On Thursday, Belarusian border guards refused entrance to Roman Varszytski, a TV cameraman from Republic of Poland. (29-AUG-05)
Political animation persecuted criminally
Political animations that feature a person who resembles Aliaxadr Lukashenka caused the authorities to launch criminal proceedings. KGB accuses the authors of insulting the President (which is against the law). (22-AUG-05)
Sites attacked in Belarus
Anatol Liabedzka, UCP, and Ludmila Hraznova, a Belarusian Human Rights group, claim their web sites have been attacked by unidentified hackers. They believe the attack has been masterminded by Belarusian KGB. This is not the first case when opposition web sites have fallen victim to hacker attacks.
Vasilieu is amnestied, Lievanieuski stays in jail
In September 2004 Valiery Lievanieuski (right), chair of the Nationwide Strike Committee of Businessmen, and his deputy Aliaksandr Vasilieu were found guilty ofinsult to Aliaksandr Lukashenka (violation of Article #367 of the Criminal Code) and sentenced to two years of colony. Recently the authorities have amnestied Aliaksandr Vasilieu. However, Valiery Lievanieuski wasn?t granted parole. (17-JULY-05)
