The Ministry of Justice, Mr. Mihajlo Manevski, proposed immediate changes in the Criminal Code and doubled the sentences for child abuse. The immediate changes took place after the meeting of the Government around three weeks ago. Manevski was designated in charge of preparing more severe punishments for sexual assault over children, after it was concluded that the paedophilia in FYR Macedonia was still in progress.

14 Norwegian youth and student organisations on November 6th sent a letter to Norwegian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Jonas Gahr Støre in which they demand that Norway takes a more active and leading role in the search for a solution to the conflict in Western Sahara. We believe that it´s time that Norway demonstrates a much clearer support for the Sahrawi people´s struggle against occupation and oppression, the letter reads.

The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) today denounces the arrest of freelance journalist Hadis Mohammed Hadis in Hargeisa and call for his immediate and unconditional release. Hadis Mohammed Hadis was arrested on 3 November 2008 at Igal International Airport by Somaliland Criminal Investigations Departments (CID) Officers. Hadis was arrested after seen filming the dual bombings on 29th October in Hargeisa.

ARTICLE 19 welcomes the commitment by the Inter-American Commission on
Human Rights’ (IACHR) to develop standards on the regulation of community
broadcasting.

ARTICLE 19 is alarmed by a recent statement by the Bahraini Interior minister, Shaikh Rashid Bin Abdalla Al-Khalifa, reported in the local press, calling for the enforcement of Article 134 of the Bahraini Penal Code against any citizen who attends meetings, conferences or seminars abroad or meets with representatives of foreign countries, organizations or bodies to discuss the internal affairs of Bahrain, without government authorization.

This is the summary of the “Report on the position of Roma in Croatia” and the round table discussion during it’s public presentation organized by Croatian Law Centre on Friday 21 October in Zagreb Press Club.
