Regarding criminal prosecution of Nadezhda Nizovkina and Tatiana Stetsura

The participants of the conference “Human Rights: Between Law and Morals” and partner organisations of the project “Electronic Human Rights Education for Lawyers”, issued a letter of concern today regarding the criminal prosecution of lawyer and journalist Nadezhda Nizovkina and lawyer Tatiana Stetsura. Ms. Nizovkina and Ms. Tatiana Stetsura had been held defendants in a criminal case for inciting hatred against the Russian bodies.

„Dangerous” Prisoners in Strasbourg

The issue of security regime as set for the so called „dangerous prisoners” (hereinafter the „N” regime), has recently been one of the most controversial issues in Poland’s penitentiary practice. The most concerning are the procedure of classifying prisoners as „N” prisoners and the protracted detention in the „N” units, which is often extended without duly justified reasons.

Burma: cyber attacks against independent news websites

Burmese exiled media groups are calling for international support in ending cyber attacks that have crippled two news websites over the past week. The Democratic Voice of Burma (DVB) and The Irrawaddy magazine, which provide independent coverage of current affairs in Burma (Republic of the Union of Myanmar), have been the target of intense attacks which it is believed originate from the Burmese government.

Call for support of the right to freedom of association and peaceful assembly

Human Rights House Foundation and members of the South Caucasus Network of Human Rights Defenders are concerned about the restrictions on the freedom of assembly and association in the South Caucasus and call upon the Organisation for Security and Co-Operation in Europe (OSCE) and its Member States to give priority to strengthen mechanism, ensuring that the right to freedom of association and peaceful assembly are respected.

No major changes after elections in BiH

Elections in Bosnia-Herzegovina appear to have perpetuated the country’s persistent ethnic divisions. With the votes counted, results show that in the contest for the tripartite presidency, Muslim and Croatian voters have chosen moderates who favor cooperation, but in the Serbian entity, the winning candidate stands for separatism.

October 3 was the day for all the Tibetans in exile all over the world to exercise their right to vote. All the Tibetans in exile went to cast their ballots to nominate candidates for the post of Tibetan Prime Minister and the Tibetan Parliament-in-exile.

HRHF participates at OSCE review conference

HRHF will participate at the OSCE Review Conference in Warsaw, Poland, 6-7 October, and attend the side event “Human Rights defenders in the NIS region: common threats and strategies of defence”. The side event is organized in cooperation with the International Youth Human Rights Movement. Representatives from the South Caucasus Network of Human Rights Defenders will also be present.

Kazakhstan: adopt Freedom of Information Law

Republic of Kazakhstan is one of the few member states of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) without an access to information law. As a result, public governance remains non-transparent. Free speech organisation Article 19 released its analysis of the draft Law on Access to Public Information which has been created by a group of Kazakhstani MPs and legal experts.
