New regulatory legislation: a threat to peace-building in Georgia

With Georgia’s ‘State Strategy on Occupied Territories: Engagement through Cooperation,’ the government has adopted new modalities for conducting activities in the occupied territories. Both Georgian civil society and international organizations have received the strategy critically, saying that the new restrictions the Georgian government has placed on their work in Abkhazia and South Ossetia will destroy the small amount of trust that has been built up between the conflicting sides.

Fatullayev’s fate – in the hands of the Council of Europe Committee of Ministers

Representatives from four international non-governmental organisations, including Human Rights House Foundation, undertake a joint advocacy mission on 30 November – 2 December to the Council of Europe during the Ministers’ Deputies meeting to raise their serious concerns regarding the Azerbaijani government’s non-compliance with the European Court’s ruling in Fatullayev’s case.

NHC: Norway must address contradictions in Kazakhstan’s OSCE chairmanship

Norway must take the opportunity to address significant contradictions in the Republic of Kazakhstan chairmanship at the Summit, says Bjørn Engesland, Secretary General of Norwegian Helsinki Committee. We should not allow a well-polished façade to blur the fact that Republic of Kazakhstan has been using this chairmanship to get international acceptance of their poor human rights record.

Гэтым разам прэтэндэнтаў на галоўную пасаду – аж 10, усе яны былі без праблем зарэгістраваныя. Але калі прыгледзецца, становіцца зразумела, што свабода і лібералізацыя – строга падкантрольныя ўладам, а роўныя магчымасці – не больш за фарс.

Human right week

Human Rights House Tbilisi is organizing the Human Rights Week from December 3 to 10 dedicated to the International Day for Human Rioghts.

December 3, at 13:00 – Working meeting with the women lawyers (Article 42 of the constitution);

December 6 at 12:00 – Documentary film on ICC – “The Reckoning” (moderator: Ana Natsvlishvili, the lawyer, HRIDC);

December 7 at 12:00 – Documentary film on photo-reporters “Shooting Under Fire” (moderator: Giorgi Kupatadze, the IWPR);

December 9 at 12:00 – Documentary film on violence against women – “The Return” (moderator: Natalia Zazashvili, the psychologist, Union Sapari) ;

December 10 at 13:00 – Documentary film on juvenile offenders – “Books not Bars” (moderator: Maia Tsiramua, the psychologist, GCRT);

HRHF and Article 19 in Strasbourg to lobby for Azeri journalist’s release

HRHF, represented by Vugar Goyaev, manager of HRH Baku, travels to Strasbourg today as part of an NGO delegation to lobby for Azeri journalist Eynulla Fatullayev’s release. Reporters Without Borders and the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers are also part of the joint advocacy effort.

HFHR seeks support for its campaign against journalists’ surveillance

For several years now, public opinion in the Republic of Poland has been confronted with unlawful use of operational techniques by special services. The matter was publicized especially with respect to surveillance of the media representatives. Contradicting basic principles of democracy, including freedom of the media, the matter has become of great concern to the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights.

Poznań Equality March Observation Report

The Equality March entitled “Equal rights are not the privileges”, being a part of 7th Day of Equality and Tolerance, took place on 20 November 2010 in Poznań, Republic of Poland with the participation of approximately 300 people. The march was preceded by the contrmanifestation. Six observers of the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights were present on the request of the Police.

Writer: we have very little impact on culture without free speech

In his speech at the European Writers’ Parliament in Istanbul, Hari Kunzru raised the issue of writer’s labour value in internet age, the privatization of public space, degradation of meaning of words and use of language to produce nationalism. He also criticized Republic of Turkey on s free speech violations.
