Photo-reporters released in Georgia

Four photo-reporters charged with espionage were released from the courtroom on July 22. Tbilisi City Court sustained the prosecution’s motion to approve the plea bargain deal with the photo-reporters as they pleaded guilty. In the end the court found them guilty of espionage, in particular Zurab Kurtsikidze has been sentenced to a three-year trial period, Natia Gedenidze received a year and a half’s trial period and Irakli Gedenidze and Giorgi Abdaladze have received two four-year trial periods.

Journalist charged with disclosing information on proceedings that were closed to the public

The District Court in Września officially allowed the journalist of a local newspaper to read files of a case that had been closed to the public. However, once Tomasz Sz. used this privilege and subsequently wrote an article on the trial, he was held criminally liable. The matter is being monitored by the Observatory of the Freedom of Media in Poland Programme.

Hearing in the case of an artist from Łódź on the limits of artistic freedom

On Monday, 18 July, the court heard the case of Krzysztof Kuszeja, an artist from Łódź. Kuszeja is a 47-year-old graduate of The Strzemiński Academy of Art in Łódź who earns his living as a computer graphic designer and paints in his spare time. In some of his works, Mr. Kuszeja deals with social issues that are often controversial in nature.

Facts of Torture, Inhuman, and Degrading Treatment in Georgia

In Georgia, the prohibition of torture and other cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment or punishment is enshrined in both national legislation and international obligations. Even so, all of these still occur in Georgia. Human rights defenders particularly point to ‘the impunity syndrome,’ which also results in ineffective investigation. The report of the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment on the visit to Georgia in 2010, also annual reports of the Georgia’s Public Defender, notably the 2010 Report, highlights the same problem.

Again: Executions in Belarus are a violation of its international obligations

Belarus has violated its international obligations by executing two death row inmates whose cases were being reviewed by the United Nations Human Rights Committee, despite requests to the Government to await the results of the review.

Students and HR defenders in Vilnius mourn victims of terrorist attacks in Norway

On 25 July Belarusian human rights activists and students of the Summer School of Human Rights gathered at the Norwegian Embassy in Vilnius, to express their condolences on the occasion of the two terrorist attacks in Oslo. The attacks took place in Norway on 22 July and claimed the lives of at least 76 people.

25 ліпеня беларускія праваабаронцы і навучэнцы Летняй школы па правах чалавека сабраліся ля амбасады Нарвегіі ў Вільні, каб выказаць свае спачуванні у сувязі з двумя тэрактамі. Яны адбыліся ў Нарвегіі 22 ліпеня і забралі жыцці 76 чалавек.

The Belarusian Human Rights House in Vilnius hosts the presentations of the documentary “The cause of death is «–» “, which tells about the death penalty in Belarus. There are held discussions with the filmmakers and human rights activists, where guests can discuss the issue of the death penalty. The next presentation will be held on August 3, everyone is invited to participate.
