The ability to seek, receive and use resources from domestic or foreign sources is an integral part of the freedom of association. In recent years, however, an increasing number of countries have imposed constraints on the ability of civil society organizations to access foreign funding and other resources. Mr. Maina Kiai, Special Rapporteur on the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and of association, addresses this issue in his second thematic report, which will be presented to the UNHRC on 30th May 2013. In cooperation with Mr. Kiai, this side-event will further explore this issue, examining foreign funding restrictions, governmental justifications, and possible responses to this growing threat to the freedom of association and civil society.
