Among the killed was also, allegedly, a policeman, who was overtaken and brought to the ground by an angry crowd and shot with the gun he was carrying, after it was taken from him.

The heavy clampdown on the riots have caused serious concern among human rights organisations and observers of the freedom of expression situation in the country, both nationally, regionally and internationally, especially in view of the fact that this happens approximately two and a half years in advance of Uganda’s forthcoming parliamentary and presidential elections, scheduled to take place some time early 2012.

Previous elections, both in Uganda and elsewhere in the region, have been preceeded by similar attacks on the right to freedom of expression and assembly, especially where there is an ethnic component involved threatening to destabilise the current regime, as was presumed to be the case here.
