Uganda Journalist Association demands release of journalist

Republic of Uganda Journalist Association (UJA) has demanded the release of a journalist currently under detention at Makindye Military Barracks. Mr Patrick Otim is a reporter with the state-owned Mega FM Radio in Pader and Rupiny newspaper.

Speaking yesterday at UJA headquarters in Kampala, Mr Ladisleus Rwakafuuzi Kiiza, the lawyer for Human Rights Network for Journalists, said Mr Otim should be released.

“Detaining Mr Otim at military police is illegal,” Mr Kiiza said. “Why do you detain somebody for over a month instead of 24 hours?” Mr Otim together with six others was arrested by plain-clothed CMI operatives on May 6 in Pader District. Since his arrest, neither Mr Otim nor his colleagues has been taken to court. Army spokesperson Felix Kulaigye, right. said he is not aware of the detention.
