“With the direct help that we have received, such as new furniture, new television, vast number of hygiene means, blankets, electricity and water intervention etc. this shelter has resulted in immediate positive changes. We even note that the women in the Shelter have become more optimistic, which is great turn in their behaviour.  Thus, we are grateful to the Red Cross of the City of Skopje and the UNHCR for their altruistic interest in helping our target group“, said Nade Kachakova, project assistant in Macedonian Women’s Rights Center (MWRC).

Shelter for women and children victims of domestic violence is the oldest continuous project of MWRC organization. The center for protection of victims of domestic violence was opened as a first and up till now, the only shelter in Macedonia. It covers the whole territory of Republic of Macedonia, without any national, race, religious or sexual discrimination.

„The Domestic Violence Program is focused on providing primary care for women and children victims of domestic violence. The main recognizable aspect of this program is the existence of a facility, the shelter, where women and children are cared for and accommodated. This is the only shelter in Macedonia and it is run by an NGO. Even though it is a temporary solution, for this marginalized group the shelter has unquestionable meaning, especially in urgent situations when they are in need of accommodation“, says Kachakova.

Shelter Center for women and children victims of domestic violence includes primary care such as free accommodation, food, hygiene, medication and other individual needs, counseling services for women and children such as medical and psychosocial help and support, pedagogical and legal aid and interventions and mediation between the women and various institutions.
