Now the mother of the executed is determined to get a reply in writing from Vadzim Zaitsau, the chairman of the KGB, as to why the KGB would not return the notes.

Kavaliova filed the first complaint to the chairman of the KGB on 4 June. There has been no response so far, except for a strange call on her mobile phone.

“On 19 June a woman called me. She did not tell me her name, just said that she worked in the KGB detention centre, and stated that they had given all Uladzislau’s belongings back to me. She said it quickly, in half a minute’s time, and hung up without giving me the opportunity to ask her anything. What was that? Why should I trust any phone calls instead of getting a written response to my written complaint, as it is required by law? You cannot see one’s ID on the phone — that is what I wrote to Vadzim Zaitsau in the re-appeal”, said Liubou Kavaliova.

Kavaliova’s second appeal to Zaitsau was recieved by the KGB office on 16 July, but she has not got any response so far.

She says that she has no confidence in the KGB detention centre staff, and is not inclined to believe their words:

“I have already had bad experience. I was sending parcels with food to the KGB jail [for the then convicted son] and was told that Uladzislau got them. Later, when he was executed, we received his personal belongings from the KGB jail and among them there were the same foodstuffs – in sealed packaging. It means that Uladzislau never got those parcels!

Among the things we received was the yellow folder which my son was taking to all the hearings and where all his notes were kept. But I received it empty. Where are the papers? They were not in the list of things that had to be destroyed under the court decision; as well as we have not received any documents that they were attached to the file of the terrorist attack case”.

The mother of the executed has not received any documents stating that the notes were destroyed according to the law.

Liubou Kavaliova is looking for her son’s notes as his last will was that she kept them. This was written in his letters home, so Uladzislau could not destroy the notes intentionally.

The mother of the executed insists that the head of the KGB find out what is happening in the prison which reports to him and give her a written response.

Ms. Kavaliova believes the notes could have contained information about inappropriate prison conditions, that is why they were withdrawn.

She considers reluctance to return her son’s notes to be one more reason to distrust the investigation and trial in the case of terrorist attack in Minsk on 11 April 2011.
