The first session of the XXIV Human Rights School, organized by the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights, took place on 7-9 January. Its participants represent various environments, including teachers, police officers, civil workers, clerics, non-government organization activists. There are still 8 sessions ahead of them and an examination in June.

The Human Rights School is one of the Foundation’s oldest programmes; it has been in organized since the fall of 1991. Courses on Human Rights and Liberties, as well as second degree seminars for graduates, are carried out as part of the School. The School’s objective is to educate lecturers, who will conduct educational programmes in the scope of human rights, as well as non-government organisation activists. Within the confines of the Human Rights School’s programme, the participants familiarize themselves with, among others, the philosophy and history of human rights, their catalogue, as well as the instruments of human rights protection in domestic and international law. The course ends with an examination, after which certificates are awarded.

The lecturers include outstanding experts on this subject matter from university centres in: Lublin, Krakow, Poznan, Torun, Warsaw and Wroclaw, as well as experienced employees from the Constitutional Tribunal, the Supreme Court, the Office of the Commissioner for Civil Rights Protection, and the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights.

Up till now, 736 people have completed the Human Rights School. The school’s graduates organize and hold classes in the scope of human rights, are active in non-government organizations, organize counselling and intervention centres, cooperate with the HFHR during monitoring and intervention activities.
