Reporters Without Borders (RSF) is asking free expression advocates to sign an online petition urging the Gambian government to open an independent inquiry into the murder of journalist Deyda Hydara. Hydara, one of Gambia?s most respected journalists and a correspondent for Agence France Presse, was gunned down on December 16. A week-long fact-finding mission conducted by RSF in December concluded that Hydara was “murdered by well-organized professionals in a premeditated operation.” RSF calls on President Yahya Jammeh to appoint an independent commission of investigation after discovering that “most witnesses are afraid of being questioned by the authorities”.
