As part of the procedure described in the pact, every few years the states-parties submit a report concerning the abidance by the Pact´s resolutions. Besides the government´s report the non-government organizations prepare alternative reports, in which they present a perspective different to that of the government and point out the problems, which were not brought up in the official report.
The Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights reproaches the government with discontinuing cases concerning beating up by the police, prolonging the period of temporary arrest to more tan 12 months, the difficult access to cost-free legal assistance for poor people and the violation of the freedom of media.
The Campaign against Homophobia criticized the existence of homophobic contents in school handbooks concerning so-called “preparation to family life”, as well as the discrimination of homosexuals in the workplace.
The Federation for the Rights of Women and Family Planning underlines the problem associated with the results of the government´s family-oriented policy: the abortion underground, the lack of sexual education, as well as the difficult access to contraceptives.
Today the members of the Human Rights Committee will also ask the Polish government questions about the implementation of the recommendations associated with the previous periodic report. Many of the problems have not been solved, including e.g. the issue of violations by police and penitentiary officers, as well as overcrowded prisons.
