The Norwegian Helsinki Committee (NHC) left today on a fact-finding mission to Kosovo to investigate the human rights situation prior to the decision on the future status of Kosovo, expected to be ade later this year. In recent months, unrest has increased in the province. 10 February, the police killed two persons while breaking up a deminstration. (12-MAR-07)

Human rights organisations ask whether the national and international leadership for Kosovo have shown sufficient ability to assure the population that the governing institutions can lead the province effectively and in a fair and just way. Read the leter to the Kosovo authorities here.
Another important human rights issue in relation to the decision on the status of Kosovo is the situation for the province’s minorities. The Serbian population experience fear and a great degree of uncertainty about their future. The solution to the problem of Kosovo’s political status must contribute to secure and protect the minorities. NHC will discuss this with relevant authorities and organisations, and will also visit Roma camps in the province.
