The Assembly of the city of Sarajevo, at its session held on 29 September 2005, gave Mrs. Natasa Kandic, the executive director of the Humanitarian Law Center, an honorary citizen of the city of Sarajevo award, upon the initiative to do so by Izudin Filipovic, a councilman of the Sarajevo Centar municipality, who said that “during the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Mrs. Natasa Kandic had been, not alone and not the only one, but definitely one of the few who had raised their voices in an attempt to put an end to the slaughter of the innocent citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina”.

“After the signing of the Dayton Agreement and the ending of the war operations, the voice of Mrs. Natasa Kandic could be heard, and is still heard, consistently and regularly, in the demand to condemn the genocide and bring the perpetrators of the crime to justice. Her demand, known and recognized all over the world, to punish those who had committed the heinous crime in Srebrenica is still reverberating. And not only in the capitals of the world, but in her Belgrade, too, and in her country, that is, where many, at the highest levels of the neighboring country, try to diminish or deny the participation of individuals and the troops from Serbia and Montenegro in the crime and aggression. The consistency and courage of Mrs. Kandic is amazing and can serve as an example of a human involvement of a humanitarian and righteous person” states, among other things, the explanation of the move submitted by the Sarajevo Center municipality.

The move goes on to say that, because of all this, Mrs. Natasa Kandic does deserve to be an honorary citizen of the city of Sarajevo.

Honorary citizen of the city of Sarajevo is a recognition usually awarded to the citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina, but it can also be awarded to a foreign national who has contributed considerably to the development and affirmation of the city of Sarajevo and to the development of international and interpersonal relationships based on the principles of solidarity, democracy, humanity and tolerance.

The Charter of the City of Sarajevo is given to a foreign national, an honorary citizen of the city of Sarajevo.
