After Uladzislau Kavaliou was executed, his mother Liubou received a package with her son’s personal belongings from the KGB detention centre. However, the yellow folder which Uladzislau had during the court sessions was empty.
“He had this folder in the court, there were notes that he took during his trial and after it when he, together with the attorney, reviewed a court case preparing to compile a cassational appeal. Uladzislau asked me to save these records”, Kavaliova said two months ago.
On 30 April Kavaliova sent a letter to the Head of the KGB detention centre, requesting to return the notes. However, the mother of the executed never got the response to her appeal.
“After the execution of the sentence, they sent me all Uladzislau’s things, but the yellow folder, where he kept the records, came empty. Now the KGB detention centre does not explain what happened to the notes. I do not know what to think: maybe someone stole them, or maybe someone is going to extort money for them? Therefore, I demand KGB Chairman Vadzim Zaytsau to clarify the situation and explain why his staff does not respond on time. They violate the decree on the complaints of citizens, and I believe that the perpetrators should be punished”, says Kavaliova.
Uladzislau Kavaliou’s mother says that her son’s papers were his personal belongings and that they had simply disappeared in the KGB jail. “They did not send his notes home and did not provide any documents indicating that my son’s notes had been included into the case file or destroyed in a lawful manner”, she explains.
According to the law, no one had the right to destroy the notes: only a few pieces of material evidence in the case of the Minsk metro explosion are supposed to be destroyed. On the other hand, the records of Uladzislau, according to his mother, may contain some important information, for example, relating to violations during the detention. That is why the notes could have been confiscated.
The mother of the executed considers the investigation, the trial and the death penalty of Dzmitry Kanavalau and Uladzislau Kavaliou unfair and hopes that this case will be reconsidered in the future.
