The Rafto Human Rights Series film “On a Tightrope”, portraying Uyghur children an orphanage in the Chinese province of Xinjiang, has been awarded the Short Grand Prix Award at the prestigious Chicago International Documentary Festival. It was the only Norwegian film at the festival which shows more than 100 documentaries from around the Globe. (17-APR-07)

“On a Tightrope” follows four children over more than a year as they struggle to master the ancient Uyghur tradition of Dawaz, tightrope walking. Uyghurs are the largest Muslim minority in the People´s Republic of China. “On a Tightrope” shows how the Chinese government in the education of the children systematically violates the freedom of religion. The film is produced by Torstein Grude and Bjarte Mørner Tveit for Piraya Film, and directed by the Czech-Canadian philosophy professor and film maker Petr Lom.
