The crackdown put an end to free expression, giving Eritrea the dubious distinction in the eastern Africa region and Africa as the country where independent media, journalist association and, or union is not entertained- putting the Horn of Africa country at par with the People´s Republic of China and Iran in terms of the number of journalists detained.

Currently, some 15 journalists are still being held incommunicado in metal containers or underground cells in Adi Abeito military prison (northwest of Asmara, on the road to Keren), in Eiraeiro prison (near the locality of Gahtelay, north of the road from Asmara to the port city of Massawa), in the Dahlak archipelago or one of the many other detention centres scattered around the country. Some journalists have managed to escape from the prisons and are currently living in exile while four of them succumbed to the deplorable conditions in the prisons.
