Conference on controversies around freedom of the media in Poland

“Authorization in the Polish Media Law” was the title of a conference organized on 13 January 2009 at the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights in Warsaw. Journalists, lawyers and academics discussed whether the new media law which introduces obligatory authorization of media stataments (e.g. in interviews) violates freedom of speech.

The conference was attended by both academics and professionals who analysed diferent aspects of the authorization in the new media law and its consequences for the standard of freedom of expression in Poland. Among them were: Teresa Torańska, a journalist of “Gazeta Wyborcza”, author of numerous interviews with polititians and political activists, Ireneusz C. Kamiński (PhD) and proffesor Bogudar Kordasiewicz, representing the Legal Institute of the Polish Academy of Science, and Michał Zaremba (PhD), from the Faculty of Journalism of the University of Warsaw.

The conference was organized within the new programme of the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights called the Observatory of Freedom of the Media in Poland. This programme is carried out in partnership with Human Rights House Foundation (Oslo) and Article XIX (London). The main goal of the Programme is the increase of standards related to freedom of expression of both print, broadcast and electronic media.

HRC56: Human rights in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine

On 10 July 2024, Human Rights House Foundation delivered a statement at the 56th session of the UN Human Rights Council, welcoming the release of Nariman Dzhelal, repeating calls for the release of Server Mustafayev, and raising concerns about the situation for forced transfers of Ukrainian civilians within the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine and to the Russian Federation.

Georgia’s “foreign influence” law: Implications & recommendations

On 28 May 2024, the Georgian Parliament adopted the Law on Transparency of Foreign Influence, inspired by the Russian authoritarian-style “foreign agent” legislation.
