-According to Human Rights Watch´s recently released annual report for 2004, Burma is still one of the world´s most repressive regimes, says Aase Sand of the Norwegian Burma Committee, one of the member organisations of the Human Rights House in Oslo. -Burma still has the highest number of child soldiers in the world and continues to hold approximately 1300 political prisoners, says Sand. (2-FEB-05)

Despite promises of political reforms, Burma remains one of Asia´s and the world´s most repressive regimes, concludes Human Rights Watch´s annual report for 2004. Whatever there are of reforms happen without the leading oppositional Aung San Suu Kyi being part of the process. The same goes for the country´s leading opposition party. Burmese authorities are guilty of gross violations of human rights against the country´s ethnic minorities, and women are particularly at risk og being subjected to these violations. Rape is being systematically used by the military forces as a weapon to humiliate and distruct minorities and oppositionals.
