The famous Belarusian activist and human rights defender Ales Bialiatski has been elected Vice-President of FIDH, one of the most influential human rights organizations worldwide. The Human Rights Center Viasna led by Ales Bialiatski became a FIDH member in 2004 and the election shows the importance of the international society’s support and regard for Belarus and its human rights activists.(25-APR-07)

On April 24th, human rights defender Ales Bialiatski was elected Vice-President of the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH). FIDH is one of the most influential world human rights organizations. The central office of FIDH is based in Paris. FIDH has an observatory status in the United Nations, and  a possibility to speak at the sessions of UN bodies.

Last year Ales Bialiatski was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. In 2006 he received the Sakharov Prize in Norway and the Homo Homini Award in the Czech Republic.
This week, FIDH, which unites human rights organizations from about 140 countries of the world, is having a congress in Lisbon.

Yesterday’s election of Ales Bialiatski as  Vice Presidentis a great honour for all Belarusians.
