7 October, 2007 people in the Russian Federation and other countries reversed Anna Politkovskaya`s memory. Anna was a very famous Russian journalist and human rights defender, who opposed war in the Chechen Republic and criticized Putin`s regime. She was shot dead a year ago. In Anna`s commemoration there were held a number of events all over the world. (15-OCT-07)

Playing Grieg`s music in Anna`s memory
Concert 33The Human Rights House in Moscow/The Russian Research Centre for Human Rights also contributed in Anna Politkovskaya commemoration day. In Moscow there was organized a concert in her memory. The musicians from the Russian Academy of Music named by Gnessins played classic music of a famous Norwegian composer Edward Grieg, whose 100 year-death-anniversary passed on 4 September 2007. That day people gathered together to remember Anna, among them there were human rights activists, journalists, Anna`s friends and people, who didn`t care about her death.


Other event in Anna`s memory, held in Moscow
The whole number of “Novaya Gazeta”, published on 8 October, was devoted to their colleague. Besides, there was held a huge rally in the centre of Moscow, organized by Another the Russian Federation. The rally gathered more than 1500 members. People cryed out the following slogans: “Russia without Putin!”, “We`ll never forget and forgive!”, “Politkovskaya died in the war for freedom against tyranny”.
On the house, where Anna lived and was killed, the human rights activists from the United Civil Vistavka 2 Front and movement SMENA put a memorial tablet. And one more event, devoted to Anna`s memory, was held in the centre of Moscow, on Bolotnaya Square. It was a memorial photo-exhibition . In spite of bad weather that day, many people came to see it. The photo-exhibition was organized by Human Rights Organization Memorail, Centre DEMOS, Novaya Gazeta and others.  There were represented reporter photos, dedicated to Beslan and Chachnya, the subject, which Anna had been working on. The heroes of the exhibition were ordinary people from the Northern Caucasus, militarists, children – all the people, who was touched by the terror and war. These people weren`t the heroes of Anna`s reports, but they could have become them if she was alive…


Where else Anna was remembered
Besides the Russian Federation, some events in her commemoration were held all over the world. In Oslo, Bergen, Vilnius and Prague there were organized concerts. A rally was held in New-York. In front of the Russain Embassy in Berlin a picket took place. In London there were awarded a Prize named after Anna Politkovskaya. Natalya Estemirova, a journalist from the Nothern Caucasus, got it.
