16 Days of activisim against gender based violence is an international campaign launched by Institute for Women’s Global Leadership in 1991 and supported by Center for Women’s Global Leadership.

The participants of the campaign mark the dates between 25th November, International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and 10th December, International Day of Human Rights, in order to link violence upon women with human rights and stress that such violence represent the violation of human rights.

This period of 16 days also emphasizes the importance of other significant dates, such as 29th November –  International Women Human Rights Defenders Day, 1st December – World AIDS Day and 6th December – Anniversary of Montreal massacre.

Campaign „16 Days of activism“ is implemented by individuals and groups worldwide who are using human rights framework to appeal for elimination of any kind of violence against women, through:

  • Raising awareness on local, state, regional and international level;
  • Empowerment of local activities;
  • Connecting local and global activities;
  • Ensuring space for dialogue and strategy exchange;
  • Making pressure on governments to fulfill their duties from local and international instruments;
  • Demonstrating solidarity with activists from all over the world.

In 2008, the topic of the Campaign is linked to the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and recognizing that human rights cannot be universal without women human rights also being respected.

The UDHR60 Campaign offers the opportunity to celebrate past 60 years of advocacy for women and to publicly advocate for realization of women human rights, including the right on life without violence.
