“We hope that law enforcement agencies will find and punish those to blame for this violence. We have already expressed our attitude towards these events and asked state agencies to strengthen work in this direction,” said Seaword. “If the crimes are not solved and those to blame for them are not found, this will negatively affect Azerbaijan’s image and rating of law enforcement agencies,” said Seaword.
He also expressed hope that next year problems hindering observation of right to freedom of assemblies and human rights will be eliminated. Next year OSCE will continue training for observation of freedom of assemblies for law enforcement agencies, which started in 2006, said Seaword. In 2007 OSCE will also continue its work to improve electoral legislation of Azerbaijan and strengthen freedom of speech. A special attention will be drawn to the dialogue of Azerbaijan and strengthen freedom of speech. Speaking about the convicted satirist Sakit Zahidov, Seaword has expressed regret that appeal’s court remained in force the first instance court’s decision to sentence the satirists to three years of imprisonment. “It is very pity that such a decision has been taken. OSCE has been monitoring this trial during a long period and we have already expressed our concern about this case,” added Seaword.
