Mr. Arne Lynngard, Chairman of the Rafto Foundation has organized a fundraising campaign to get medical treatment for 20 year old Sidi Elfakraoui. The young man was thrown out of a window in the 4th floor of a building by Moroccan police, and consequently broke his back, arm and both his legs. The police started to follow him for no obvious reason, and Mr. Elfakraoui ran from them, fearing what they might do to him. (16-AUG-2005)

He was taken to hospital, but did not receive any medical care for five days. Sidi was then moved from Laâyoune in Western Sahara to Marocco’s capital Rabat where he has undergone surgery. However, he is being refused further medical treatment by the Moroccans. The Rafto Foundation wants to raise NOK 20 000, so that he can be examined by a foreign medical doctor and get proper treatment.

-We have managed to raise NOK 12 000 so far, but we will try to get more money before we end the fundraising campaign, Mr. Lynngard says.

The Moroccans are tightening their grip in Western Sahara. Several Saharawi activists have been arrested lately, and subjected to torture. A prominent activist; Mr. Ali Salem Tamek, is currently on a hunger strike, because the Moroccans want to move him from a prison in Western Sahara to a hospital for mentally ill in Morocco. The ill-treatment of Saharawi activists has caused internationally attention. Amnesty International has given a statement in which they condemn the Moroccan actions, and the deportation of a Norwegian delegation in July also drew a lot of attention to the current situation in Western Sahara.

The spokesperson of the Norwegian solidarity group for Western Sahara, Mr. Ronny Hansen, says that despite the all the publicity, very little action has been taken on government-levels around the world.

– Norway is actually the only country where the government has taken a clear stand against Morocco. In addition to this, Norwegian business activities involved in Western Sahara have seized, like the buying of phosphate allegedly produced in Western Sahara and involvement in the search for oil along the coast.

On Friday the 12th of August at 3 pm, the small Saharawi community in Norway will together other organisations, launch a demonstration outside the Moroccan Embassy in Oslo.
