On 19 June, the charismatic Nobel Peace Prize Laureate from 1991 Aung San Suu Kyi turns 60. The Burmese human rights defender and democracy campaigner is under house arrest for the third time, and will on her birthday have served an accumulated nine years and 238 days since she was first refused to leave her home in 1989. For the last two years, she has been unable to communicate with the outside world. (18-JUNE-05)
All over the world, Aung San Suu Kyi?s birthday will be observed, among other things, with a massive postcard campaign. In Norway, there will be arrangements in several different places, among them Oslo, where the Norwegian Burma Committee, an in-house member of the Norwegian Human Rights House, hosts an open invitation birthday party right in front of the Norwegian Parliament from 1 to 3 pm. Needless to say, Norwegian authorities will be reminded of the Committee?s opnions on their policies towards Burma.
Raftohuset, the Human Rights House in Bergen, will also observe Aung San Suu Kui?s birthday, and in Ã…lesund, a smaller town further up the west coast, an MP from the 1990 Burmese Parliament is planning to let the locals know what day it is, too. In Trondheim, the local Burma Committee intends to carry out its postcard campaign in companionship with local units of Amnesty International and in many other places around the country, too, Aung San Suu Kyi?s day will be observed.
The Norwegian Burma Committee encourages everyone to join the celebrations and let your opinions about the Burmese regime be known by way of sending a postcard to Aung San Suu Kyi herself. Even if the cards will most probably not reach their intended recipient, thousands of cards, from thousnds of different individuals, will not go unnoticed with Burmese authorities.
