Where: Vilnius, the Museum of Genocide Victims (Auku g.2)

During the discussion, the premiere of the film “6 Arguments against the Death Penalty” will be held. The film consists of six clips-arguments that talk about disproportionality and cruelty of the capital punishment. The film will be screened in Russian with English subtitles. The audience will have a possibility to talk to Viktor Tretyakov, the director of the film, as well as Polina Stepanenko, the scriptwriter, and Andrei Paluda, the coordinator of the campaign “Human Rights Defenders against the Death Penalty”. The discussion will be moderated by Vytis Jurkonis, Project Director, Freedom House (Lithuania office).
Discussion “(Il)legal Killing…” will also touch upon the question of extra-judicial killings in Belarus: human rights activist Raisa Mikhailouskaya will tell about unexplained disappearances of the opponents of Aliaksandr Lukashenka and about the investigation of these cases. Even though a formal investigation had been started 16 years ago, however, to date no one has been brought to trial for these crimes, and the relatives of the missing as well as the general public do not know, who is behind the disappearances. During the event, as a sign of mourning for those dead and disappeared the participants will observe a minute’s silence, and the candle will be lit symbolically.
Following the discussion, the participants will have the possibility to see a unique exhibition in the Museum of Genocide Victims. The cells, where the prisoners were kept and interrogated, including the cell, where the executions were held, are still preserved in the basement of the museum.
