Some 30 members of the Burmese diaspora in Norway, joined by a contingency of Norwegian Burma activists, listened to appeals, sang and laid down yellow roses of hope at Suu Kyi´s portrait today, as part of a ceremony that appropriately took place at the Camilla Collett monument, right, in the Royal Castle Park in the heart of Oslo. 19 June is also Burmese heroines´ day. Aung San Suu Kyi. Photo IDEA.jpgMany dressed in red, just like in the worldwide rallies for a free Burma last September, gathered around the very vivid statue of Collett, a Norwegian pioneer feminist and freedom activist from the early 19th century. As reported on this site, Suu Kyi´s house arrest was recently extended. Over the years she has been under house arrest, her birthday has grown to become a day to demand women´s liberation, and celebrate the many female heroes of Burma. The tribute to Suu Kyi marked another step ahead for the Burma Nationalities Associations Women´s Group, an organisation that was only established last year, in relation to a conference focussing on the particular problems and predicaments of women in Burma today, hosted at the Human Rights House in Oslo.
