Norwegian PEN today awards the author Ebba Haslund, right, the Ossietzky award for her outstanding contribution to freedom of expression. Haslund, born in 1917, publishedher first book in 1945, is translated into 16 languages, and has received several awards for her authorship. Complimenting her own authorship, Haslund, left, has also translated numerous books and plays and served as a literary critic in a number of newspapers and magazines. Throughout her life, she has also been a keen participant in Norwegian public ebate, not the least on issues to do with freedom of opinion and expression. As a member of Norwegian PEN since the 50s, her efforts have particularly centered on the Writers in Prison Committee. In recent years, she has also written extensively on Fredrik Fasting Torgersen’s suspected miscarriage of justice case.
