Throughout the entire process of thawing out relations and intensification of contacts between Minsk and Brussels, the Belarusian official side was sternly stressing its own, exclusively pragmatic, interest in ‘liberalisation.’

Yet Belarusian authorities moved aside any political questions and responsibilities.

A regular ritual of restating well-known stresses happened during a presidential visit to an agricultural enterprise ‘Alexandria.’ “We would very much like to get in this project, Eastern Partnership, what we really want and counting for: roads, pipelines, infrastructural projects, etc. – addressed Mr Lukashenka to journalists. – That is we are keeping a pragmatic side here.”

And he added: “People need practical results from this project. And what do they want from us? Too much talking about democracy and human rights. It is just an empty talk and twaddle.”
