The Prague Society for International Cooperation´s Hannu R. Ellenbogen Citizenship Award is awarded to an individual who has dedicated his or her life to public service. According to the tradition following this award, the prize money is passed on to a gifted young person, comparable, or at least of similar convictions, to the recipient of the Award. This year´s winner, former Czech President Vaclav Havel, was particularly pleased to name Andrej Dynko as the beneficiant of the financial portion following the award. According to The Prague Society´s home page, the newspaper Nasa Niva, at which Dynko is the editor, has made itself a symbol of Belarusian national tradition. At the same time, its focus on politics and culture is consequently cirtical of President Aleksandr Lukashenka´s regime.
Belarusian human rights defender receives award
Andrej Dynko, editor of the Minsk-based independent newspaper Nasa Niva and instrumental in the process towards establishing a human rights house in the Republic of Belarus, has received the financial portion of the Hanno R. Ellenbogen Citizenship Award from the Prague Society. Dynko recently participated in the HRH Network´s annual meeting in Bergen. (07-NOV-03)
