Belarusian HRH and HRHF concerned about non-registration of Nasha Viasna

Belarusian Human Rights House in exile in Lithuania and the Human Rights House Foundation sent a letter of concern to the Belarusian authorities today, expressing their deep disappointment with the decision of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Belarus to turn down the appeal against non-registration of the human rights organisation Nasha Viasna.

The two organisations called upon the Belarusian authorities to reconsider the decision of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Belarus of 12 August 2009 and to allow the founders of Nasha Viasna to correct the breaches and proceed with their registration. They also called upon the Belarusian authorities to abide by the laws of the Republic of Belarus and international obligations ratified by the country, in particular the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (Article 22).

HRC56: Concerns related to freedom of expression in Serbia

On the sidelines of the 56th session of the UN Human Rights Council, Human Rights House Foundation underlined several concerns related to freedom of expression in Serbia including Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation (SLAPPs), the misuse of the Law on the Prevention of Money-Laundering and the Financing of Terrorism to target civil society organisations, and inadequate protection mechanisms for journalists and the persistent impunity for crimes against them.
