Three years ago, 20 October 2004, the opposition Belarusian journalist Veranika Cherkasova was found stabbed in her apartment in Minsk.  Her relatives and colleagues still did not get the clear answer who was guilty in her death. They do not exclude she could be murdered for her professional activity:  Veranika wrote a lot about special forces activity and covered  Belarusian and Iraqi relationships during Hussein period. The investigation on the assassination of Veranika Charkasava is suspended as before “in connection with obscurity of a person, who is supposed to be charged offender”. The Chief of the Special Investigation Department of Minsk Prosecution Siarhej Ivanou informed about it.  Practically the same he mentioned during the BAJ Press Service at the end of August 2007 also.

The BAJ Press Service informed that relatives of Veranika even didn’t know that the case had been reopened at the end of 2006. The latest information they knew considered the suspension of the case on March 14, 2006. Now Siarhej Ivanou refused to tell journalists, with what the latest reopening of the case was connected.

Veranika’s mother Diana Cherkasova comments the situation “…The only people who do not let this case “to die” are journalists. If they forget everyone will forget. And the next victim will be the bravest one. Internet recourses are in the hands of journalists, there some newspapers also…That’s why they are able to do something”.

In April 2006 the Internet site (http://www.veronikacherkasova.org.) dedicated to Veranika’s case was created. There you can find the information about the investigation of her murder, publication in Belarusian and foreign press and statements of Belarusian and international organizations.
