Inconvenient films discussion “Is it possible to dream in the Island of Stability?”

Program:

18:00 Screening of the film “Belarusian Dream”

18.55 Discussion “Is it possible to dream in the Island of Stability?”

Questions of the discussion: Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaitė once said “Lukashenko is a guarantor of economic and political stability in Belarus, its independence”, whereas the number of political refugees from Belarus is growing, the observers of elections are reporting more and more violations, people are being sentenced to death sentences, and people are sentenced to prison term for peaceful and legitimate civic and political activities. Is it possible to dream in that Island of Stability? How do people dream and act? What actions are possible to bring change? Can Belarusians alone fight for democracy or do they need the support of their neighbours and the whole international community?

Moderator: Tomas Tomilinas, “Belarus Watch”

Panelists: Freedom House Project Director Vytis Jurkonis, Chair of the International Centre of Civic Initiatives “Nash Dom” National Board member, editor of the independent newspaper “Vitebskij Kurier” Oleg Borschevskij, Coordinator of “European Belarus” civic campaign Pavel Marynich, Representative of the Legal Transformation Centre Elena Tonkacheva (TBC),“Govori Pravdu” (Tell the truth) campaign representative (TBC).

Belarusian Dream (Belorusskaya mechta)

Russia / 2011 / 55, Director: Ekaterina Kibalchich,

“Belarusian Dream”, is a story of a young person from Minsk who has lived most of his life in a country ruled by a dictator. Against the background of falsified elections, brutal repressions, and a severe economic crisis, it shows how more people in the most ‘stable’ post-Soviet country are starting to demand change. This is a story about how the regime can crush a person, and how you can find your own freedom in a state that possesses total control.
