The display coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Tibetan National Uprising and aims to counteract “Serf Emancipation Day,” the Chinese government holiday celebrating the day the Communist Party dissolved the Tibetan government and “brought democratic reforms to Tibet.” The Laogai Museum hopes to educate the public on contemporary human rights abuses in Tibet and the Chinese government’s use of laogai – forced labor prison camps.
