Kenya: Harassment of sexual minorities in Kenya

The intimidation of Pouline Kimani, a leading member of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI) community causes deep concern.

Human Rights House Foundation (HRHF) is deeply concerned about recent manifestations of intolerance against homosexuals in Kenya.

Since her participation in the first ever televised discussion on homosexuality in Kenya, 23 August this year, Pouline Kimani, a leading member of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI) community has suffered verbal abuse, harassment and received death threats.

HRHF urges Kenyan authorities to lead by example in developing a society of inclusion and equality, tolerance and solidarity, in particular with regards to minorities and marginalised groups, among them the country’s LGBTI community. A proactive policy in this regard will imply explicit condemnations of all expressions of discrimination and intolerance and the allocation of sufficient resources to make genuine attempts to bring those responsible for such acts to justice. Finally, HRHF urges Kenyan authorities to observe their primary responsibility to protect all their citizens, without exception.

Human Rights House Foundation and members of the Network of Human Rights Houses urge the Parliament of Georgia and the National Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Republika Srpska to drop proposed “Foreign agent” legislation that can damage civil society and media irreversibly, to respect international obligations undertaken by their states under Council of Europe and the UN instruments, and to uphold fundamental freedoms underpinning free and independent civil society.

HRHF welcomes the adoption of Council of Europe Recommendation on SLAPPs

As a part of the Coalition Against SLAPPs in Europe (CASE), Human Rights House Foundation welcomes today’s adoption of the CoE recommendation on Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation (SLAPPs) by the Committee of Ministers. We call on CoE member states to follow the comprehensive recommendation, and to genuinely implement effective domestic measures to protect human rights defenders, journalists, and other civil society actors against SLAPPs.
