The 4th of August – the International Day of Solidarity with the Civil Society of Belarus.

As part of the International Day of Solidarity with the Civil Society of Belarus on 4-5 of August, 2013. Vilnius will host a series of events, dedicated to the anniversary of the arrest of Ales Bialiatski, the prominent Belarusian human rights defender. Ales Bialiatski was sentenced to 4.5 years of imprisonment for the activities in the field o protection of human rights in Belarus.

Information campaign on Sunday, 4 August

On Sunday, 4 August, the information action will be organized in the center of Vilnius: activists will talk about the persecution of Ales Bialiatski and other social and political figures of Belarus, and everyone would be able to sign postcards for Belarusian political prisoners.

Time of the action: 13.00 – 14.00 and 17.00 – 19.00

Picketing of the embassy of Belarus on Monday, 5 August

On Monday, 5 August, Belarusian, Lithuanian and Ukrainian social activists will gather in front of the Embassy of Belarus in the Republic of Lithuania to express solidarity and support for human rights defender Ales Bialiatski, who was sentenced to prison for his vigorous activity in the sphere of human rights.

The participants of this action will lodge the collective appeal calling for the release of Ales Bialiatski and other political prisoners, and an immediate end to repression against the Belarusian civil society activists to the Ambassador of the Republic of Belarus .

Last year, the activities of the framework of this action were held in more than 18 countries around the world, this year a variety of actions of solidarity will also be held in different countries around the world, including Lithuania.

Concerns about responses by state authorities to the global COVID-19 crisis

The network of Human Rights Houses is concerned by recent actions on the part of state authorities across western and eastern Europe, the western Balkans, and the Caucasus in response to the escalating COVID-19 crisis. These actions, taken to combat the rising number of infections and deaths associated with COVID-19, raise questions about states’ commitments to civic freedoms and human rights.
