During 2008, six Croatian non-governmental organizations established the Human Rights House Zagreb (HRH Zagreb). The founders of the HRH are: Association for Promotion of Equal Opportunities for people with Disabilities, Association for Protection and Promotion of Mental Health “Svitanje“, Center for peace Studies Zagreb, Centre for Dealing with the Past “Documenta“, Civic Committee for Human Rights and Women’s Human Rights Group “Be active, be emancipated – B.a.B.e.”. Two more organisations – Croatian Legal Center and Legalis will join in the end of January.

The HRH Zagreb is established with the aim to promote, develop and improve protection of human rights according to the UN Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, UN Covenant on Civic and Political Rights, and the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms.

HRH Zagreb’s activities include:

  • Securing the physical place to work for organizations that promote and protect human rights in general and promote and protect human rights of certain categories, such as persons with disabilities, women, children, asylum seekers etc.;
  • Creating professional and supportive environment for the organizations that are members of HRH Zagreb or are members of the organizations themselves;
  • Planning of the work and joint activities of the organizations members of HRH Zagreb;
  • Improving cooperation and creating joint projects between organizations members of HRH Zagreb or organizations themselves;
  • Implementing all activities that promote the work of HRH Zagreb;
  • Organizing legal help to citizens of Croatia;
  • Organizing and conducting human rights education;
  • Organizing lectures and round tables in the human rights area;
  • Publishing books, newsletters, publications from the human rights area;
  • Filming of video spots, documentary movies and other video materials  from the area of human rights;
  • Developing and maintaining the support to existing web pages that promote the concept of human rights protection;
  • Developing programs of cooperation with the Human Rights House Foundation in Oslo;
  • Developing communication and cooperation with other human rights houses established worldwide under the protection of the Human Rights House Foundation in Oslo;
  • Implementing other activities that are in accordance with mission of HRH Zagreb and laws of the Republic of Croatia.
