New Members for Human Rights House Azerbaijan

Three independent human rights organisations form new core group of Human Rights House Azerbaijan.

On 15 September 2017, the Human Rights House Foundation (HRHF) announced an open call for non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to apply to be members of the new core group of Human Rights House Azerbaijan (HRH Azerbaijan). The core group is responsible for managing the House and setting its strategic direction inside the country.

Ten Azerbaijani organisations applied and, after a careful selection process, three organisations were found to comply fully with the HRH Azerbaijan selection criteria. HRHF very much appreciates the strong interest from Azerbaijani civil society.

The three members of HRH Azerbaijan’s new core group are:

Women’s Association for Rational Development, led by Shahla Ismayil
Legal Education Society, led by Intigam Aliyev
Election Monitoring and Democracy Studies Center, led by Anar Mammadli.

HRH Azerbaijan was founded in 2007 as an international branch of HRHF. The House provided a vibrant space in central Baku for dialogue, discussion and education on human rights. In March 2011, Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Justice ordered the House to cease all activities.

HRHF will continue its policy of constructive engagement with the Azerbaijani authorities, with a view to re-launching the activities of the House inside Azerbaijan.

Authorities in Georgia & Republika Srpska must irrevocably withdraw legislation threatening to stifle independent civil society

Human Rights House Foundation and members of the Network of Human Rights Houses urge the Parliament of Georgia and the National Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Republika Srpska to drop proposed “Foreign agent” legislation that can damage civil society and media irreversibly, to respect international obligations undertaken by their states under Council of Europe and the UN instruments, and to uphold fundamental freedoms underpinning free and independent civil society.

HRHF welcomes the adoption of Council of Europe Recommendation on SLAPPs

As a part of the Coalition Against SLAPPs in Europe (CASE), Human Rights House Foundation welcomes today’s adoption of the CoE recommendation on Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation (SLAPPs) by the Committee of Ministers. We call on CoE member states to follow the comprehensive recommendation, and to genuinely implement effective domestic measures to protect human rights defenders, journalists, and other civil society actors against SLAPPs.
