Nobel Prize Committee protests South Africa’s refusal of visa to Dalai Lama

Latest 11:00 GMT: The organisers of the conference mentioned below has just confirmed their decision to cancel the event. In the announcement, made in Johannesburg this morning, the diplomatic tension that has emerged between South Africa and the People´s Republic of China over the visa to HH Dalai Lama, right, was given as the reason for the cancellation. The Norwegian Nobel Committee will not take part in a conference in South Africa because of SA’s visa rejection to His Holiness the Dalai Lama. The South African government’s refusal of visa to His Holiness to attend the Nobel laureates’ conference, under pressure from the People´s Republic of China, is unacceptable to the Norwegian Nobel Committee."

We will not take part in the conference unless His Holiness Dalai Lama is granted visa," said Mr Geir Lundestad, right, Director of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, to the Norwegian Tibet Committee. The Norwegian Tibet Committee is also trying to contact the Norwegian soccer team, whose Mandela Cup match is scheduled for Saturday 28 March.

HRC56: Concerns related to freedom of expression in Serbia
