International Human Rights Defenders Day recognises the important role of human rights defenders in improving societies and contributing to peace and democracy. International standards for the protection of human rights defenders are recognised worldwide, including the standards that are enshrined in the UN Declaration on Human Rights Defenders. However, human rights defenders and activists are still facing threats and persecution.
Human Rights House Tbilisi will celebrate this day in Georgia, to raise awareness about human rights defenders and non-governmental organisations that defend human rights and to recognise their role properly.
On behalf of its member organisations, the House has invited representatives of public and civic sectors, diplomatic corps and international organisations. The informative booklets and posters developed by the Human Rights House Foundation about human rights defenders for the 20th anniversary of the Declaration of Human Rights will be presented during the event (with both English and Georgian versions). The booklet and posters explain the threats faced by human rights defenders and the internationally recognised principles of their protection.
The event is organised by “Human Rights House Tbilisi” (HRHT) and its member organisations. The event is implemented with the financial support of the Human Rights House Foundation within the framework of celebrating 20 years since the adoption of the UN Declaration on Human Rights Defenders.
To underline the importance of the work of human rights defenders, the House will also produce short films.

“Rights of Defenders” aims to promote understanding of international standards that protect and empower human rights defenders.
As part of the project, Human Rights House Foundation has developed tools and resources for defenders to disseminate standards nationally, engage with authorities and hold them accountable to the commitments they make internationally, and initiate national conversations on the importance of defenders and their work.
