Media and human rights organizations report that 2013 was marked by an unprecedented number of attacks on journalists, half of which came in December, when the “Euromaidan” mass protests started in Ukraine.
Member NGOs of the Civic Solidarity Platform, including HRHF, are concerned that beatings of journalists are not investigated in a efficient, transparent and speedy manner, as expressed in their joint statement of 31 December 2013.
“We indeed have the feeling that violence committed by the police in Ukraine as retaliation against peaceful protestors and against journalists is not facing serious investigation, as it was promised by authorities to various international visitors, including the Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjørn Jagland, and many Members of the European Parliament” said Florian Irminger, HRHF’s Head of Advocacy and Geneva Office.
