Six months after the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, Human Rights House Foundation repeats its condemnation of Russian aggression against Ukraine and ensuing human rights crisis. HRC50 summary: Pushing for action on crisis in Eastern Europe and advocating for stronger international human rights standards

At the 50th Session of the UN Human Rights Council, Human Rights House Foundation continued its work calling on the Human Rights Council to take action on the human rights crisis in Eastern Europe characterised, in part, by the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation, and the increasingly dire human rights situation in Belarus.

HRC50: Human rights in Crimea

On 5 July 2022, at the 50th session of the UN Human Rights Council, Human Rights House Foundation (HRHF) highlighted the human rights situation in Crimea in the context of the Russian occupation and aggression against Ukraine. HRHF called on the Council to continue to express solidarity with Crimeans, to address opportunities to provide support to victims of political reprisals in Crimea and to provide assistance to investigations into serious human rights violations and international crimes occurring in Crimea as well as the rest of Ukraine.

On 16 May 2022, HRHF and international and Ukrainian civil society organisations hosted an event at the Supplementary Human Dimension Meeting in Vienna. At that time, we issued recommendations to participating States to strengthen the Moscow Mechanism mandates.

HRC Special Session: Statement on Ukraine

On 12 May 2022 at the 34th Special Session of the UN Human Rights Council, Human Rights House Foundation repeated its condemnation of Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine, called for every assistance to be given to the Commission of Inquiry to carry out its work, and urged the United Nations to do its utmost to protect human rights defenders and journalists working in Ukraine.

Further action needed by PACE to address human rights violations following Russia’s renewed invasion of Ukraine

The consequences of the Russian Federation’s aggression against Ukraine is the focus of the ongoing plenary session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) in Strasbourg this week. Ahead of the urgent procedure debate on “Russian Federation’s aggression against Ukraine: ensuring accountability for serious violations of international humanitarian law” on Thursday, 28 April 2022, Human Rights House Foundation (HRHF) urges PACE to call for additional support to human rights defenders in Ukraine, Russia, and Belarus and to support the establishment of international accountability mechanisms for serious violations of human rights committed as part of Russia’s renewed invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022.
