In the past week, human rights in Crimea and the need to support Crimeans have been in focus at the United Nations – in Geneva and in New York.

Human rights defenders have submitted to the UN Committee on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination an alternative report on the implementation by the Republic of Belarus of the corresponding UN Convention. The report’s authors concluded that the Roma in Belarus are subject to discrimination, particularly in employment, resulting in exclusion, extreme poverty, and criminalization of the part of country’s Roma population.

Аўтары справаздачы прыйшлі да высновы, што рома ў Беларусі падвяргаюцца дыскрымінацыі, асабліва ў працоўнай сферы, вынікам чаго становяцца выключэнне, скрайняя беднасць, крыміналізацыя часткі ромскага насельніцтва Беларусі.

On 26 October, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Belarus Miklós Haraszti presented his report on the human rights situation in the country at the 72th session of the UN General Assembly in New York (USA).

“The reform undertaken by the Government, presented as a cure, appears to be worse than the disease affecting the Polish judiciary” declared the UN expert on the independence of the judiciary, concluding his visit to Poland last week.

Human rights defender Özlem Dalkiran and several of her colleagues have been released on bail. HRHF calls for the charges against them to be immediately and unconditionally dropped.
