Journalists flee East African countries – region’s free expression deteriorates

Fifty-seven journalists fled their country in the past year, seven of them fled Somalia. Three other East and Horn African countries – Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Rwanda – also rank among the top 10. East and Horn of Africa: freedom of expression trends in 2011

According to human rights and free speech organisation Article 19, the year 2011 has seen both positive and negative developments regarding freedom of expression and freedom of information in the region of East and Horn of Africa. Horn of Africa: humanitarian crisis needs quick response, Kenya wants refugees moved home to Somalia

Some 1,300 refugees are crossing into Kenya daily from Somalia, fleeing conflict and the region’s worst drought in 60 years. New refugee camps are rapidly needed. Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has found alarmingly high rates of malnutrition among the Somali refugees arriving and settling on the outskirts of the Dadaab refugee camp in northeastern Kenya.
