Somali journalist killed in Mogadishu fighting
Veteran radio journalist Barkhat Awale, right, was killed by crossfire on 24 August in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, according to local journalists and news reports. He is the second journalist killed on duty in Somalia this year. Freedom of expression under increasing pressure in Ethiopia
On May 23rd, the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) won the presidential election in a landslide victory. Prime Minister Meles Zenawi has been in power since 1991. This government has yet to demonstrate effectively its commitment to democracy, and civil and political rights, especially the right to freedom of expression. No civil society submissions from within Ethiopia to the United Nations HR Committee's review
In its report to the Human Rights Committee, the government of Ethiopia states that “to promote the operation of charities and societies and to ensure their transparency and accountability, a Proclamation for Registration and Regulation of Charities and Societies has been issued and is effective now.” This proclamation helped Ethiopian authorities strangle the country’s independent human rights organisations. 12 Jul 2010 »
