Discrimination of gays and lesbians on the rise

Amnesty International statement protesting arrests and killings in Ethiopia
On 7 November 2005 police brought to court 24 opposition leaders and others who were arrested in Addis Ababa on 1 November following street demonstrations which erupted into four days of violence when police started shooting. At least 46 protesters were killed in Addis Ababa and other towns, and at least 4,000 were arrested. Amnesty International protests. 14 Nov 2005 »
Ethiopia statement: Human right defenders under threatening conditions
The East and Horn of Africa Human Rights Defenders (EHAHRD) Network yesterday issued another statement on the increasingly severe situation in Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, violating the rights and affecting the security and working conditions of human rights defenders and their families. Main opposition candidate, Colonel Besigye arrested
FDC president and presidential candidate Rtd. Col. Kizza Besigye, right, has been arrested. Besigye was arrested at Busega, a few miles away from the city center, by armed men, some of whom were in plain clothes. His green Landcruiser Prado, now headed for the Central Police Station, is being closely followed by two police trucks. 14 Nov 2005 »
Ethiopia's capital, once promising, finds itself in crisis
Addis Abeba, the capital of Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, fancies itself the capital of Africa, the crossroads of the continent, a refined refuge where African leaders gather to address the crises in unruly places like Republic of the Sudan, Ivory Coast and Congo. The city's most powerful resident, Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, right, has been deemed one of Africa's new generation of leaders, a rebel turned democrat and darling of the international donors.
