Worrisome pressure by the European Union to further reduce the UN human rights budget

Members of the Human Rights House Network (HRHN) express their concern to learn that the European Union is aiming at further reducing the ordinary budget of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. The participants of the conference “Human Rights: Between Law and Morals” and partner organisations of the project “Electronic Human Rights Education for Lawyers”, issued a letter of concern today regarding the criminal prosecution of lawyer and journalist Nadezhda Nizovkina and lawyer Tatiana Stetsura. Concerns with deterioration of freedom of expression and opinion in Russia

Tagansky district court of Moscow found the organizers of the exhibition in Sakharov Museum "Forbidden Art 2006", former museum director Yury Samodurov and former director of the Department of High Technologies of Tretiakov Gallery Andrey Erofeev guilty of inciting religious hatred and enmity. Samodurov has been sentenced to pay a fine of 200’000 rubles and Erofeev has been sentenced to a fine of 150’000 rubles. 16 Jul 2010 »

Activist from Ingushetia killed in ambush

ARTICLE 19 is shocked at the killing of Maksharip Aushev, a well-known activist from Ingushetia. Aushev was killed on 25 October in Kabardino-Balkaria, a neighbouring republic of Ingushetia, when his car came under fire from another passing vehicle. Condemning the murder of Natalia Estemirova

The South Caucasus Network of Human Rights Defenders strongly condemns the murder of the prominent human rights defender Natalia Estemirova. On the international day of justice, July 17, we call upon the Russian authorities to conduct an immediate, thorough and impartial investigation of this case and previous murders of human rights defenders in the country.
