About the Award of the Belarusian human rights community

The National Human Rights Prize for the achievements in the field of human rights was established by the "Human Rights Alliance" in 2008. The first winners were the human rights defender Barys Zvozskau, the lawyer Tamara Sidarenka, the journalist Siamion Pechanko.

Over the years since its founding the award has expanded and today it is a prize, with which the Belarusian human rights community awards the best human rights defender of the year, the best journalist of the year, the best lawyer of the year (up to 2015) and for the first time in 2016 - the best human rights campaign or initiative of the year.

Co-founders of the award are Belarusian Association of Journalists, Belarusian Documentation Centre, Barys Zvozskau Belarusian Human Rights House, Belarusian Helsinki Committee, Public initiative against lawlessness in courts and prosecutor's office, Committee for Protection of the Repressed "Solidarity", Human Rights Alliance, Human Rights Center "Viasna", Legal assistance to the citizens, Legal Initiative, Center for Legal transformation

The National Human Rights Prize winners in the past years:

2016: Siarhej Drazdouski, Office for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (Human rights defender of the year); Adarya Gushtyn and Dzmitry Drozd (Journalists of the year),"Imena" ("Names") Internet magazine (The best human rights campaign or initiative of the year).

2015: Valiantsin Stefanovich, Human Rights Centre "Viasna" (Human rights defender of the year); Zmicier Lukashuk, European Radio for Belarus (Journalist of the year); Valery Shchukin (Person of the year).

2014: Elena Tonkacheva, Center for Legal Transformation "Lawtrend" (Human rights defender of the year); Alena Pankratava, the author of the program “Freedom in Prisons”, as well as the "Viasna" website (Journalist of the Year); Liudmila Kazak (Lawyer of the year)

2013: Andrei Bandarenka, "Platforma" (Human rights defender of the year); journalists creating the program "I have the right" on "Belsat" TV channel (Journalists of the year); Harry Pahanyaila, Belarusian Helsinki Committee (Lawyer of the year).

2012: Liubou Kavaliova (Human rights defender of the year); Andrzej Poczobut, "Gazeta Wyborcza" (Journalist of the year); Alina Shostak and Alvina Dryho (Lawyers of the year).

2011: Ales Bialiatski, "Viasna" (Human rights defender of the year); photojournalists Julia Darashkevich and Uladz Hrydzin (Journalists of the year); Maryna Kavaleuskaya and Darya Lipkina (Lawyers of the year).

2009: Raman Kislyak (Human rights defender of the year); Aleh Hruzdzilovich, "Radio Liberty" (Journalist of the Year); Paval Sapelka (Lawyer of the year).
