As a means of addressing the root cause of political prisoners, RPP engages in rights Awareness activities through workshops, cultural activities and production of publicity materials.

 RPP has three main programs:

  • Legal affairs program (focusing on prisons and courts)
  • Civic education program (workshops, publicity   and cultural activities)
  • Support programs (research, networking and   newsletter)
The organization has 10 full time staff members.

Since RPP is a membership organization, there is a pool of volunteers for the above programs.

The organization has not been legally registered as an entity on its own. It currently operates as a legal body under a license of the Kenya Human Rights Commission ( this is an indicator of how the organization is still held in suspicion by the authority.

The organization has a Constitution with a Board of seven national executive committee members who include two women.

RPP has been a very controversial organization due to the sensitivity of the issues of political prisoners particularly during the 1980 and 1990s.  It has been a target of harrasment and intimidation by the establishment.  For example,  In 1996, it Secretary General was killed in what had the signature state involvement. It members took the biggest brunt of the tortures, imprisonment by the state machinery.
